For you code warriors out there

Have you heard Jonathan Coulton’s Code Monkey? Well, better then just hearing, watch this video:

There are a bunch of videos to this anthem. This is one of my favorites. Oh hell, I liked ‘em all. I ended up embedding the last one I looked at for th 3rd time.

One shouldn’t interpret the enjoyment I get from this music and video to mean it summarizes my life in any way as I am not a code warrior/monkey or unhappy in my work. No front desk where I work.

While I work for a software company I am in the minority of people that cannot write the stuff myself. I also seem to like my job more than many people. I wonder if there is a relationship here?

Goodbye Jerry

1 : worthy of reverence : REVERED
2 a : of or relating to the clergy b : being a member of the clergy — used as a title

The first definition is earned. The second granted, like a PhD, after meeting some qualifications. I wonder who decided that clergy would be Reverends?

The passing today of Jerry Falwell will be noted by some as a great loss. While I wished him no ill in this life I think it is worth looking at his words and consider why I, for one, won’t miss his presence on the world stage.

AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.

Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

I am such a strong admirer and supporter of George W. Bush that if he suggested eliminating the income tax or doubling it, I would vote yes on first blush.

I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I’m going to buy a Suburban next time.

And, to show he wasn’t completely off the mark:

I don’t want to upset you, but I don’t own a private jet. I don’t own a model airplane.

Goodbye Mr. Falwell

Grateful I prepare my own food.

In most office buildings it seems the mens room and ladies room (loo) are back to back so they can share common plumbing. More then once I’ve been reading a good book when someone sits on the other side of the wall and disturbs my peace. I noticed something different the other day though. I’m at the urinal when I hear the flush in the ladies room. Not more then 5 seconds later I hear someone leave that room. 5 Seconds and I think I’m being generous.

I admit I don’t usually wash for the 30 seconds recommended but I do use soap and water and enough time to make sure both engage in creating bubbles. Hell, it takes me 5 seconds to dry my hands!

5 seconds, maximum. Is this the new 5 second rule?

What’s my price?

Twenty bucks. Put another way, would you pull a twenty dollar bill out of a toilet? I did. Washed it right off with soap and water and dried it on a radiator. The toilet wasn’t too dirty, I think, and I washed up real good after.

What would I have done for a $100? I don’t want to think about it.

Dead but not forgotten

Today I attended a funeral for a person I never met. I knew her only by the stories others told and by the legacy she left. I wasn’t sure if I should go but ultimately felt that showing up was the right thing to do. I’m glad I did for a bunch of reasons. The biggest reason was one thing I heard said. A story was related by one of the woman’s daughters.

To paraphrase -
Daughter says to mother: I love you.
Mother says to daughter: I love you more.

I got it right away and so did the daughter. No kid can love a parent as much as the parent loves the kid. It’s just not possible, but to know this you have to be a parent.

This went straight to my tear ducts.

Leftie bummer

I confess to listening to Air America Radio. Not all the time but sometimes. We need something on the radio that pushes back against the right wing nut jobs (you know who they/you are). Some would claim NPRfills that void but I don’t agree. IMHO, NPR is the closest thing we have to fair and balanced here in the US.

What I was getting on about though, was today’s news item that Air America Radio is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. I am disappointment but I have a glimmer of hope as they seek new financing. I rather doubt Walmart will be signing up as a sponsor.

Death to comment spam

I hope.

I activated Akismet in hopes of getting rid of the comment spam I’ve been assaulted with of late. I hope it works. If you’re one of the rare real people who comment, you may discover a service interruption.

#1 Seller in China and India

That’s it. It’s time to quit the day job and buy the mansion on the moon. I have the the sure fire get rich quick scheme. Can’t fail. This is it. Deep breath everybody:

Toxoplasma gondii Tea

Oh yes. Toxoplasma gondii Tea. Scientific studies show that toxoplasma gondii significantly increases a woman’s chances of having a male baby. Think of the lives this would save? This could really reduce infanticide around the world.

I think I’ll make my spaceship baby blue. What do you think?

Must read reporting - Jill Carroll’s Story

I came across the serialized story of Jill Carroll’s captivity in Iraq. This was for me a riveting tail of powerlessness. After reading it, I’m not clear how I feel about her captors. Disgust, certainly. But what else? I don’t know.

I do know that anyone who thinks the Iraqis can avoid an all out civil war, (as opposed to the short story version underway), is going to have to explain how they deal with these bastards and the 1000’s of others like them. With more being minted everyday, this seems to be the impossible dream.

Darwinian slip?

I’ve heard of Freudian slips, but Darwinian? It sure would seem so. Somehow, and inexplicably, Evolutionary Biology has accidentally gone missing from the list of university majors approved for federal grants for low income students. “Opps”, or words to that effect says a spokesperson for the Department of education. Right.
