Me? Hungry. You?

Today’s emotion is: Hungry. I’ve been hungry all day, since shortly after breakfast and even now just 2 hours after lunch. Actually, I’ve been hungry since shortly after lunch finished. At the same time I feel full. I think we all know what this is about. Well, not *exactly* what this is about, just that it is about something, and that something isn’t food.

Being hungry shortly after breakfast is pretty normal for me. I don’t enjoy it but I’m used to it now. Being hungry after lunch is another matter and I don’t enjoy it one bit. I’m writing this off to stress at work. I’ve always tended to report that my work stress is “good” stress. I believe that still, but maybe stress is stress and it drives the hungry impulse until the source of the stress is removed. Perhaps.

Father’s day - 2007

Slept late today: about 6am. Sweet.

Father’s day not withstanding, I had a pretty normal Sunday. After breakfast I got out to the market for the bulk of my weeks groceries. The difference this week was my purchasing very few vegetables. On Tuesday I pick up my first load of fresh, organic vegetables from the CSA (community supported agriculture) farm I joined this year. I expect to get mostly greens but I hear there may be strawberries too. Not the gigantic overgrown, under tasty variety in the supermarkets but real strawberries that are sweet and a little rough on the outside. Actually, I bought a quart of these delights at a farm stand Sunday. My daughter and her friend bought homemade ice cream and I bought the strawberries and some homemade heirloom tomato ketchup. I don’t normally use ketchup because it’s loaded with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. This stuff had sugar as the 5th ingredient. I can eat that.

Back to the morning though, after shopping and getting some laundry going, I had a 2.5 hour conference call for an organization I’m a member of. These are always a bit tedious but they need doing and I’m happy to be able to do this service. My lunch is usually at 11:15-ish but today it had to wait. More of that lovely cheese. The last of it in fact.

The afternoon had me processing more laundry. As the day was growing boring, the kid (after much pushing and some threats) and I made our way out the door with the intent of taking a walk around a local Audubon sanctuary:Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary. Rain threatened but we were prepared. As we drove down our street, a young mother and her child were using a stick against something on the ground. I thought they were trying to right a turtle but as we got closer we could see they were trying, gently, to move a bird out of the street and onto the grass. My daughter bounded out of the car and scooped the bird into her hands. I’m not sure how the mother felt about this but the kid seemed amazed. The plan, which begin as soon as we saw what we had, was to take the bird (a baby robin) to the Tufts Veterinary School in North Grafton. It’s a place we’ve taken all manner of distressed wild beastie. So, a quick stop at home for a box, some water and bedding and we were off. One stop to pick up mid kid’s friend and we were on our way.

Most people probably don’t know that within less than an hour of downtown Boston, there are many rural areas. This outpul for Tufts is one of them. As it was Sunday and father’s day, the place was almost deserted. Just one other “client”, a young woman with a cat needing a drain removed.

We stepped right up to the desk and told them what we had. She called it a “wildlife emergency”. 30 seconds later a vet in training came from out back and thanked us for bringing the bird in. She then asked us to wait while the bird was evaluated. About 5 minutes later she was back with the prognosis: Nothing wrong, just lost. She suggested we return the bird to a safe location near where it was found and hope for the best. Nothing broken was good news. I hope handling the bird didn’t affect the chances that it’s mother would find it. In any case, we left the bird under a tree.

By now it was 5pm and I was getting hungry. The plan was dinner out: Sushi and Sake for me. We didn’t pull it all together and out the door until about 6:30. I’ve been going to a local Japanese restaurant, Oga’s in Natick, since they opened a few father’s day back. I used to love this place but now, well, it’s just not special. They changed the menu and not for the better. They used to have a Chef’s Deluxe Sushi plate. Unique and special creations which, I suspect, are still available if you order ala carte but in truth, I don’t know what to order when it comes to sushi. I just don’t know the names of most things. I seem to recall the deluxe plate was about $35. The menu replacement was cheaper at $25 but it wasn’t special. Good? Yes, but I can get good sushi almost anywhere. So, I was disappointed, but not disappointed enough to spill the truth to the owner when he asked about our meal on the way out. I copped out and said “fine”, which, for me is the same as saying mediocre. If it had been really good, I would have praised the experience. Instead, Oga got “fine”. Not good. Not honest. I need to fix that. I’ll send them a friendly note, after that, it’s up to them. There are lots of sushi places around here. Oga’s might still be the best but my experience is that if they slip up, someone will step in.

As father’s days is one of two days I consume alcohol, I did not drive myself this evening. My wife drove so I could have a large sake. I do enjoy this with my sushi and I figure if there are any bugs in the raw fish the alcohol will kill ‘em. Please don’t tell me it’s not so. I recently read that the 5 second rule has been proven false. Don’t ruin this too.

Drive home was uneventful. We looked for the bird under the tree. It was gone. I only hope it did not disappear into the gut of one of our many neighborhood cats.

The rest of the evening was uneventful. Processed some more laundry. I fell asleep for about 10 minutes sitting in front of my (non-work) computer. Sad.

Saturday - Work is good for the soul

Long and productive day. I was up early as I am most days and out at the DYI store at 7am picking up supplies for today’s project: Begin repair work on the screened porch. I had hoped to make more progress than I did but reality hit and I had to clear everything off the porch and do a good job washing it down. Clearing the porch took 40 minutes going at a relaxed pace. Why relaxed? Why not! I don’t have to kill myself anymore. I just need to make steady real progress, and I did. After that I ripped down the remaining screening, all of which was in bad shape. I hosed and scrubbed the porch with a bleach/soap/water mixture and just watched the mold turn black. This was reasonably hard work. I tried to wear eye protection while doing this but they instantly fogged up. So much for safety and anyway, bleach isn’t SO bad…is it?

After doing all this, I put all the stuff back on the porch (about 35 minutes) minus stuff to toss out. I took a break from about 4-5:30. At 5:30 the mower came out and I did the front and back in one shot, which is my habit these days. Takes about 45 minutes to an hour. I was glad it was done as the lawn, such as it is, was looking pretty ratty.

By about 7 I was settled into dinner. On Thursday I bought a block of cave aged Gruyère cheese (11.99/pound). It’s really a very nice cheese. I don’t purchase it too often but, what the hell. I had a serving of that cheese for lunch and dinner on Saturday. 2.5 ounces, allowed to warm to room temperature and served with an apple which had been chilled to just short of freezing, and then sliced and served. Cheese and crackers my ass. Cheese and apple! Of course I had my cooked veggies, salad and brown basmati rice before the climatic cheese and apple.

Finished up the evening watching a movie on TV with the kid. Cute movie: Hitch with Will Smith. I enjoy his movies almost without exception. Actually, I can’t think of an exception.

Who’s tunnel is it anyway?

Seen on a t-shirt: “Due to a change in the congress, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned back on.”

Cute but crap.

I am a registered voter and I seldom miss an election. I am registered as “un-enrolled”, which means I am not affiliated with a political party. That said, I generally vote Democratic, and lately, its been at least as much a vote against the Republican as a vote for the Democrat.

Let’s be real though. Democrats can’t agree on squat. Well, that’s not quite right. They agree that Bush and his war suck. No, wait. Lieberman supports the war. No wait, Lieberman is no longer a Democrat except he votes with the Democratic side of the aisle…most of the time. No, wait. The Democratic side of the aisle is what? There are more holes in Democratic unity then in a Rumsfeld post war plan.

Republicans have proven time and again that, if nothing else, they can pull together behind a bad idea. Democrats can’t seem to get behind lunch.

BIGAL85

Pulling into the office park this morning, there’s a pick-up truck in front of me with the license plate BIGAL85. I couldn’t see the driver but I figured it was Big Al himself. Then again, the driver appeared more petite than BIG…so maybe it was really BI GAL 85.

Doing the speed limit

This past Saturday, I had a 60 mile drive to Plymouth for a meeting at 10am. Should have taken about 80 minutes according to Google and, since I left the house at around 8am I knew I had plenty of time to get there so I decided to drive at the speed limit and no more. Wow. What a pleasant and low pressure drive. I could look around at the scenery and not worry about speed traps.

On the way home, this was much harder to do. There was probably twice the traffic. People don’t like you going “slow” even in the slow lane. I tried but I did have to speed up some times. Studies suggest that keeping up with traffic is safer then doing the speed limit. Who am I to argue?

Memorial Day - 2007

A veteran in the the town of Holliston Massachusetts posts signs on the telephone poles honoring soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. One sign per telephone pole. One flag per pole from the country for whom they served. I saw US, UK and Canadian flags. It’s a simple and very moving memorial. I considered trying to see all the signs by driving around the town but decided that, considering some of the reasons for being at war, that wasn’t such a good idea.

I don’t know if there are enough poles in Massachusetts to remember all the civilians kills in Iraq.

Impatient Farmer

I joined a CSA over the winter. CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. In exchange for a couple hundred bucks AND 6 hours of labor (2 hours at a time), I get a one half share, which means I get to pick up freshly harvested veggies every two weeks starting June 19th. This is a first for me. I eat a ton of veggies so why not try?

Today was my first two hour stint at labor. Because I’m a rookie, it was all stoop labor: filling in holes, shoveling dirt on plastic behind a tractor. I’m beat and I expect to hurt tomorrow, or later today if I take a nap. This isn’t feeling like quite as good an idea but what the hell. 2 hours done, 4 to go. I can do this.

Coincidence?

Driving in this morning, first I see a black woman driving a black Toyota Solara convertible (top up). Two cars later, a white man driving a white Toyota Solara convertible (top down).

My mind, being what it is, immediately imagined these two as a couple. A two Solara household.

Slowing to view an accident

I stopped at a local gas station for coffee stinking early the other day. I’m fixin’ my cup of decaf when in flops a woman wearing a white bathrobe and slippers. She’d just spilled out of a gigantic SUV you just know drives most of it’s miles with one occupant. Anyway, she shuffles into the store saying “Don’t look at me…Don’t look at me…I just got up!” How could anyone avoid looking? Up to the counter she goes, purchases her cigarettes and shuffles back to her SUV.

I look at the guy at the counter. He looks at me. I pay and leave, grateful for another bad habit I don’t have today.
