Draggin’

So I’ve been on this new food plan since Monday and I started out really dragging my keister. I can’t say I’m all that hungry but I’m not feeling like I’ve had enough food either. I’m eating a pound of vegetables at each meal, 3 times a day plus whatever I’m supposed to have at that meal (either a protein or starch). I get two snacks (small) and I limit my water/fluid to about 60 ounces a day (sometimes I go over..to about 85).

I used to eat eggs a few mornings a week. Not allowed at this point but I can have egg whites. To hell with egg whites. Those things are awful. I seldom throw food out, but that stuff hit the drain after one meal. I’ll eat meat or edamame instead. I sure do miss my dairy foods and my aged Gouda most of all. I better start feeling better soon OR ELSE!

Who am I kidding? I’m going to just do this for the period I committed to do it. My friend swears by the results he’s gotten from working with this alternative nutrition approach and I still want what he’s gotten so I’m willing to stick with it. If this new plan depends on the placebo effect, it will not work. If it’s for real then it could do the job.

I miss my fruit too. One small portion a day is…one small portion a day. I’m used to having about 24 ounces a day. I’m down to 4 ounces: 1/6th. That just sucks.

I’m allowed to have almost most as much “low starch vegetable” at a meal as I want. I can add fat (olive or coconut oil) too, so that’s what I have done to try to build up the calorie count as the base plan doesn’t have enough calories to keep from losing weight (which I do not need to do). I’ll be weighing myself weekly. If the weight goes down, I’ll increase the portion size. At the moment, I think that’s likely. Can’t say I’d complain about another 4 ounces of veg+1t of fat. I’d rather add fruit but that’s out for now.

So, it’s time for my Calm Magnesium hit now.

No Diary + No Vinegar = fun?

A buddy of mine reported an amazing increase in his energy levels after working with a particular “alternative” nutritionist. I trust my friend, even though he looked a little gray, so I got in touch with this person and setup an appointment, for today. I don’t have all the details yet, those will be coming in a FAX, probably tomorrow, but here are some clues about my food plan for now:

  • Only 1 fresh fruit a day instead of 3
  • No diary
  • No soy except edamame (which I love anyway)
  • No raw veggies (I currently eat 20 ounces of these a day).
  • Use only egg whites
  • Use lemon juice in place of vinegar
  • Well, I admit I’m skeptical but, I’m willing. Energy would be good.

    Me? Hungry. You?

Today’s emotion is: Hungry. I’ve been hungry all day, since shortly after breakfast and even now just 2 hours after lunch. Actually, I’ve been hungry since shortly after lunch finished. At the same time I feel full. I think we all know what this is about. Well, not *exactly* what this is about, just that it is about something, and that something isn’t food.

Being hungry shortly after breakfast is pretty normal for me. I don’t enjoy it but I’m used to it now. Being hungry after lunch is another matter and I don’t enjoy it one bit. I’m writing this off to stress at work. I’ve always tended to report that my work stress is “good” stress. I believe that still, but maybe stress is stress and it drives the hungry impulse until the source of the stress is removed. Perhaps.

Wacko Political Correctness or Sensible Redaction?

Turner broadcasting, after receiving viewer complaints, has decided “to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking.” My initial reaction is Yeah Baby! I’m not sure that’s really how I feel about it. I watched a lot of TV as a kid. It would have been better for me if they edited out glamorized eating. Both my parents smoked and I found myself never tempted by the habit myself. I used to be a radical anti-smoker: Lets just send all smokers to a lovely tropical island, sterilize them, and let them live out their days in sunny splendor. That’s not my view today but I still avoid most social situations that might expose me to smoke.

    Not Mr. Trendy

Men is girdles. There, its out. I was taken aback when I saw the headline on MSNBC today. Japanese men are flocking to girdles but a quick Google suggests this trend is not limited to Japan.

I should have seen this coming. Lets not deal with obesity, lets compress it instead! At least now airlines won’t have to get wider seats…right?

    Álcool? Encha-a Acima!

    Hick! Fill 'er up.
At the dawn of the automobile age, Henry Ford predicted that “ethyl alcohol is the fuel of the future.” With petroleum about $65 a barrel, President Bush has now embraced that view, too. But Brazil is already there.

Finally a good and appropriate use for sugar. A report in today’s NY Times explains how Brazil is taking advantage of huge sugar cane crops to supplement their fuel supply.

We’re talking a truly renewable fuel source here. Of course, the US places a 54 cents per-gallon tariff on ethanol imports from Brazil so we won’t be seeing any benefit from this here. The article does say that Brazil is capable of using all they can produce for now, but production is increasing.

There are reports of abuse of the workers who cut and process the cane, forcing more productivity in the fields. Standard employer evils. Maybe we can get Google to go into this business?

Anyway, I see a real upside here. If our economy largely embraces sugar cane for ethanol production, the price of sugar will rise. A natural effect of this will be a rise in the price of candy and perhaps this will have a positive impact on the obesity epidemic world wide.

    Just a thought.

    What is normal?

If you were ever fat, you would probably be familiar with the weight and height charts which define the normal range of weight and height for adults. It’s morphed into the new BMI Charts but the idea is the same. I’ve not been able to find the underpinning data on which these tables are built, but I imagine they must have been constructed by collecting data on a large population of western humans. Who, what, when and where I can’t guess but, I do wonder, if these tables didn’t exist today and someone wanted to make them fresh and new, what would the result be?

Look around friends. It is a bulkier world today. The latest bit of news about child seats not fitting modern kids only confirms the obvious: Fatter is normal.

Oh, and if you live outside the U.S.A. don’t feel smug. Fat kids are coming to a neighborhood near you real soon.

    Sunny Sunday

Welcome to daylight savings time, my American friends. Having sprung forward, I’m looking forward to getting out and enjoying this sunny Sunday. But first, I’ve been doing food prep for the week ahead. Cooked and put away:

I make a ton of applesause. At the moment it is my favorite fruit, though I have enjoyed the fresh pineapple I had this week and at $2.50 that comes down to about 0.60 per serving so it is a bargin.

Contra dancing last night was great. I danced both waltzes with very brave women. I tip my hat to both and apoligize to their toes.

I read an interesting book review this morning. If a scientific study of the evolution of religion interests you, take a peek.

Time to make lunch. Be well. Have fun. These are not mutually exclusive!

    Sit Spot! Only kidding…

The folks at Science A GoGo report on some research out of the Mayo clinic (low fat you think?):

What’s the best way to reduce obesity rates among children? Take their chairs away and make them stand, according to James Levine, a Mayo Clinic obesity researcher. And if this new initiative gets off the ground, children in the classrooms of the future will be schooled at “standing desks” equipped with new technologies.

Considering the fundamental fidgety nature of kids, even obese kids (yeah, I was one), this is an idea that makes sense to me. I wouldn’t make just the fat kids stand though. I’d have all kids up and about.

I sit at a desk for work, but I seldom remain in one spot for long. I’m constantly getting up to walk around. I have a wireless headset that gives me to freedom to walk all around the office and even down the hall to the bathroom while still being connected to the phone. A classroom environment that afforded more of that sort of freedom would really enhance the educational experience, IMHO. Could be rough on teachers I suppose. Still, I like the idea of having kids stand for some classes.

I’ll go further and suggest that all business meetings should be SRO. They’ll go much faster.

I wonder what would happen if they removed all the chairs from McDonald’s?

    Not your father’s firehouse

    I love this story.

“Tofu burgers are part of the menu for the vegan firefighters of Team C at Firehouse 2 in Austin, Tex.”

Yes my friends, you read that correctly. We have vegan firefighters in Austin Tx.

It seems one of the team had dangerously high cholesterol and decided to take steps. Bravo. They have a website, but its a bit hard to get to today. I haven’t been able to look at the recipes. Not sure if it’s their site or the volume on traffic the article must be generating.

FTR, I used to be fishatarian but this past summer I wanted to see how giving up dairy affected me. So, for one month I decided to eat meat and eliminate dairy. This is only a test. I loved it. I felt better. More energy, etc. I now eat meat again and dairy. I wish I didn’t feel like I had to do this, but today, I do.
