Goodbye Jerry

1 : worthy of reverence : REVERED
2 a : of or relating to the clergy b : being a member of the clergy — used as a title

The first definition is earned. The second granted, like a PhD, after meeting some qualifications. I wonder who decided that clergy would be Reverends?

The passing today of Jerry Falwell will be noted by some as a great loss. While I wished him no ill in this life I think it is worth looking at his words and consider why I, for one, won’t miss his presence on the world stage.

AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.

Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

I am such a strong admirer and supporter of George W. Bush that if he suggested eliminating the income tax or doubling it, I would vote yes on first blush.

I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I’m going to buy a Suburban next time.

And, to show he wasn’t completely off the mark:

I don’t want to upset you, but I don’t own a private jet. I don’t own a model airplane.

Goodbye Mr. Falwell
